In December 2011, the Alpha Tau Alpha Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta was born on the UW-Superior campus. Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society and recognizes students for their high achievements in English.

This student organization promotes interest in literature and the English language on campus and in the surrounding communities. Sigma Tau Delta cohosts many on-campus events with the English Club or other departments/organizations.

“I was already a part of the English Club on campus, and I didn’t know a lot about Sigma but realized I met the requirements and already was doing events with Sigma,” said Richard Sickles, the Vice President of the chapter.

Sigma Tau Delta does require an application to join as it is an Honor Society. However, all of the events are open to all students. “[Sigma has] two types [of events]. Our big event is our formal induction, and students invite friends and family. The second is more fun events; food is involved like pizza and paired with games or crafts,” said Dr. Hilary Fezzey, the advisor for Sigma Tau Delta.

This semester, the students participated in face-to-face events with masks and social distancing. “Sigma Tau Delta seems more overwhelming than it is [because of its’ Honor Society status]; it’s just about getting together and having fun while reading literature and eating pizza,” said Sickles.

Sigma Tau Delta also has both a fall and spring call for members. “There are requirements. Students must have completed three semesters of college, six credits in English, and a 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale and pay a one-time $45 fee if accepted,” said Dr. Fezzey.
