Algal Blooms Awarness Brought to UWS

Researchers at Burke Center for Ecosystem Research came to the University of Wisconsin Superior and held a panel to bring awareness to the concerns of the most resilient of the Great Lakes. Lake Superior takes a dive environmentally as algal blooms take over the shorelines of Superior. The first algal bloom occurred in 2012; scientists thought of it as a fluke, but algal blooms have been more frequently occurring since then. The Burke Center aims to raise funding to take care of the algal blooms. Currently scientists have been testing the algae by hand however having buoys placed in Lake Superior would be a much more efficient method of finding and studying algal blooms. With the environmental changes within Lake Superior, it raises concern in the Twin Ports economic standing as this rural community relies on tourism.
