The UW-Superior men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Drake Alternative hosted by Saint Mary’s at Ochrymowycz Field on Saturday, April 24. The men won their event as a team, totaling 168 points. The women, meanwhile, finished in third, totaling 118 points on the day.
Men’s Team
Freshmen Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) and Nate Huju (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) won the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles events, respectively. Foster ran 17.95 in the 110-meter hurdles final after qualifying in 17.70. Huju clocked 1:01.31 to win the 400 hurdles while senior Travis Gee (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) was second in the event in 1:05.82.
The Yellowjackets also took the 4×400-meter relay as the team of Steven Pearson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Isaiah Arntson (Esko, Minn./Proctor) and Tyler Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) and Huju ran 3:40.19 for the victory.
Women’s Team
Senior LeAnn Torgerson (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) broke the school record in the 400-meter dash at 57.43. The previous record of 57.45 was set by Lindsay Tafs in 2005. Torgerson’s time currently ranks 11th in the country.
UWS won four individual events, including Torgerson in the 200 meters in 26.82 and freshmen Alexxa DeQuevedo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley) in the 100-meter hurdles, Nanako Hara (Nishitokyo, Japan/International Christian University) in the 5,000 meters and Kasha Hughlett (Maple, Wis./Northwestern) in the hammer throw. DeQuevedo ran 17.46 to win the hurdles, Hara ran 20:01.25 in the 5,000 and Hughlett threw 41.43 meters.
DeQuevedo was also second in the javelin throw with a mark of 28.80 meters, while Hughlett finished fourth in the shot put.
The track and field teams next compete tomorrow afternoon at the Bulldog Open at Malosky Stadium in Duluth. Action gets underway at 1:00 p.m. for both the men and women.
