Coming off a convincing win on home ice last Wednesday, the Yellowjacket women’s hockey team was looking to complete a season-opening sweep over Northland College this past Saturday afternoon.
It took a while for the offense to find its footing, but once it did the Yellowjackets scored often, hitting the seven-goal mark for a second consecutive game. The ‘Jackets found the back of the net four times in the middle frame on the way to a 7-1 win over the Lumberjills at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland.
The Yellowjackets (2-0-0, 2-0-0 WIAC) got goals from seven different players in this one, and were paced by C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) who finished with a goal and three assists. She posted five points in the two-game sweep of Northland.
It took more than half a period for the Yellowjackets to break through, but they lit the lamp at the 13:00-minute mark when Jamie Davison (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) scored her first goal of the year to open the scoring. Less than three minutes later Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) scored her first of the season and the Yellowjackets led 2-0 after one period.
The Yellowjackets put the game away early in the second period, scoring three times before the period was five minutes old. Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster), who scored twice in Wednesday’s regular season opener, picked up her third of the season just 1:32 into the period. Hayes made it a 4-0 game just 82 seconds later. Then, with the Yellowjackets on the power play, Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored her third of the year as the
Yellowjackets opened up a 5-0 lead. The Yellowjackets tacked on one more before the period ended when Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) scored at 13:59.
Northland broke the Yellowjacket shutout bid at 13:07 of the third period on a goal by Clara Schmiesing. The Yellowjackets answered, however, at 18:04 when Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) scored her second of the season to make the final score 7-1.
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s School) made her first collegiate start for the Yellowjackets and earned the win, coming within 6:53 of notching the shutout. She finished with nine saves.
The Yellowjackets return home tonight when they host UW-River Falls. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
