UWS Men’s Golf Team – 2019 UMAC Champions

BECKER, Minn. – UW-Superior won its second consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men’s Golf Championship on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Pebble Creek Golf Club by 34 strokes over St. Scholastica.

The Yellowjackets shot 303 in the final round for a three-day total of 46-over 910 to earn the league’s automatic qualification to the 2020 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship May 12-15 at the PGA National Resort Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Junior Ryan Peterson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) carded his third consecutive even-par 72 to capture individual medalist honors by four strokes over senior teammate Joey Cummings (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East), who shot 3-over 75 Saturday.

Junior Sam Albrecht (Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert ) made the biggest move on the final day, jumping seven spots on the leaderboard, firing a 77 to tie for eighth at 27-over 243 for the championship.

The ‘Jackets collected nine birdies as a team in the final round, led by Peterson and Albrecht with three apiece. Peterson led the field with 11 birdies and also had 32 pars for the week. He was 5-under on par 5s and 1-under on par 4s.

Meanwhile, for the women’s team, freshman Maddie Friedman (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Spooner) shot 18-over-par 90 to climb into the top 10 on the final day of the 2019 UMAC Women’s Golf Championship.

Friedman’s round helped UW-Superior finish in a tie for fourth place in the team standings with Bethany Lutheran at 346-over-par 1,210. Friedman finished ninth overall at 69-over 285.

St. Scholastica (1,057) won the team title by 127 strokes over Northwestern. Minnesota Morris (1,203) was third. Northland (1,282) and Martin Luther (1,339) rounded out the field.
