Congratulations to the Promethean staff for winning seven awards in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation 2025 College Better Newspaper Contest! The Promethean won two first place awards, one second place, one third place, and three honorable mentions.

The 2025 Better Newspaper Contest had a total of 23 categories including five new categories: Lifestyle Story, Club/Intramural Sports Story, Business Coverage, Technology Coverage, and Environmental Coverage.

Staff won first place in Lifestyle Story and Environmental Coverage, second in Use of

Multimedia, third in News Photography, and honorable mentions in Club/Intramural Sports Story, Technology Coverage, and Column Writing.

Submitted to the Lifestyle Story category were Maddie Schaffer’s “UWS Celebrates Black History Month with Annual Soul Food Dinner,” Jennifer Cadotte’s University of Wisconsin–Superior Celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day with Ojibwe Cultural Exhibition” and her “UWS’S Red Cross Day,” and Emmett Appleby’s “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.”

Credited reporters were Emmet Appleby, Patrick Douglas, Jennifer Cadotte, Abby Hoffman, Hannah Hutton, Noa Mikami, Brendyn Otradovec, Maddie Schaffer, Xavier Walt, Maison Wiberg, and Daniel Young. These 11 staffers earned this award through their articles and photos they provided.

Staff also received first place in Environmental Coverage thanks to Ella Hill, Noa Mikami, Maison Wiberg, and Alicia Zoltowski. Submitted articles include Ella Hill’s “Wisconsin Point brings back Ishkode ‘Good Fire’” and her social media video on the Wisconsin Point prescribed burn, as well as Maison Wiberg’s “UW-Superior is Ready to Go Solar.”

Second place went to previous staffers Sama (Sky) Abdullayeva, Carter Lansdale, Maddie Schaffer, and Xavier Walt for the Use of Multimedia. Submitted were Xavier Walt’s “UW-Superior’s Master of Jazz Retires,” the 2025 May Promethean Podcast, and Xavier Walt’s video coverage “Music Professor Greg Moore Retires From UWS.

Third place went to Ella Hill and Alicia Zoltowski for their News Photography coverage on the Wisconsin Point controlled burn. Submitted were Ella Hill’s “Wisconsin Point Brings Back Ishkode ‘Good Fire,’” and three of Alicia Zoltowski’s photos of the prescribed burn that captured the monumental event. Her photo of the Fond Du Lac elder and Superior mayor, of the firefighters clearing a fire break, and the firefighters standing in a circle.

An honorable mention in Club/Intramural Sports coverage went to Patrick Douglas, Abby Hoffman, Noa Mikami, Xavier Walt, Maison Wiberg, and Daniel Young.

Submitted were Xavier Walt’s “SCCU Stadium Set to Host First Intramural Sports Games,” Daniel Young’s “UWS Athletics Department Announces Three New Offerings for Sports on Campus,” and Alicia Zoltowski’s photo of Katlyn Jones setting volleyball during St. Scholastica match.

In Technology Coverage, Aidan Salama was awarded an honorable mention for his “Building Connection in a Digital Word” and “How AI is shaping the future of learning at UW-Superior” articles.

Jennifer Cadotte earned an honorable mention for her Column Writing. She wrote how she and her son were graduating together in her article “Two Generations: One Stage for Mother and Son.”

The Promethean staff are proud to have earned these awards and strives to continue to be an award-winning newspaper bringing accurate and ethical news to the students at UWS and the community.
