The UW-Superior Yellowjackets Softball team is off to a flying start this season. Posting a 15-4 record and winning their last six games to open the season.
Over spring break the team traveled to Florida to participate in the 35th annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. Over a span of ten games, the Yellowjackets recorded an 8-2 record, winning their first four games by a combined score of 41-8, including three of those games being ended in the sixth inning.

The Yellowjackets finished out their trip going 4-2 losing both games to Westfield State and rounding out the last three games only giving up four total runs, winning all three games.
With their great start to the season, a lot of excitement is built up within the team, “I am very excited to see what this team is going to do; we have a lot of seniors and some very skilled freshman as well as everything in between I think we are going to make a big impact in this conference season,” said MyKenzie Leccia a junior for the Yellowjackets.
Leccia had a very productive trip, posting 6 RBIs over the trip, and a HR against Lesley. One of the exciting aspects of the Yellowjacket team is the emergence of freshmen, one of which being Payton Bennett.

Bennett is second on the team in batting average with an outstanding .524. She also has started all 19 games this season, as a freshman seemingly very comfortable with her role. “As a freshman, I was nervous about fitting in, but this team has done an excellent job of helping us all find our roles and feel comfortable being ourselves.” said Bennett.
Bennett attributed the seniors in helping all of the freshmen feel welcome on the team. When asked how to keep the momentum going throughout the season Bennett kept it simple in saying, “we simply need to continue to work hard, make adjustments when needed, and have a competitive mindset.”
The Yellowjackets kept that momentum going to start conference play, posting six straight victories against Martin Luther and Crown.
