The University of Wisconsin Superior Kruk Gallery hosted Illusion of Certainty, an exhibit that showcases the work of Susan Maguire, a teacher professor in the Visual Arts Department at UWS.
Illusion of Uncertainty displays Maguires experimentation with different mediums, specifically working with mediums like photography, sculpture, projection, and painting. In a podcast with Anne Dugan, Curator II of the Visual Arts Department, Maguire discusses the process of creating the exhibit and her passion for foraging materials used in her artwork.
“One of my earliest memories is picking pinecones with my mom, and how she wanted a particular clean pinecone, but anyway that kind of aesthetic appreciation of these things you can find anywhere is pretty much engrained from the beginning,” said Maquire. “I have parents that are forager collector types, and it certainly is strong in my work.”

Maquire say that she works better when her artwork is rooted in her own life and experiences. She further discusses the importance of ordering materials when working with different mediums, and how it is vital to the art experience.
“You’re taking it out of its ordinary existence, and you’re positioning It and your ordering it, basically ordering, I keep going back to that word, in a way that makes us more alert, it calls our attention, and I would say it’s the same sort of thing as a poet and how they order words in a very specific,” said Maguire.
Illusion of Certainty is displayed in the Kruk Gallery in Holden Fine and Applied Arts building. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7p.m.
