Back in September of 2022, the University of Wisconsin-Superior announced a new edition to campus. That addition to campus is known as Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium which would host both men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as the track and field teams.

The stadium was projected to be finished in time for the 2023-24 academic year but due to issues with materials, the project would have to be delayed. Now, a year and a half after SCCU Stadium was announced, the stadium will finally be being built.

On April 15, crews began preparing the grounds that the stadium will be built on. The stadium is being built on the grounds of Ole Haugsrud Stadium which was torn down in the summer of 2023.

On April 25, UWS finally was able to officially break ground on the stadium. UWS Chancellor Renee Wachter says the arrival to this date was a long process.

“The journey to this occasion has been marked by meticulous planning and unwavering dedication by many people and organizations since 2018 when the stadium was identified as a top campus priority for its far-reaching impact on academic courses, athletics, recreation programs, and community engagement,” said Wachter.

Along with UWS’ sports teams, the SCCU Stadium will also host events, classes, and intramurals. The stadium will also be open to the community. Alex Paredes, who is heading into his senior season as a Goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team, said he is ready for the impact the stadium brings to campus.

“It’s going to be amazing. The atmosphere that UWS already has off campus at the high school is phenomenal, so I can’t wait to see everybody else who can’t really get a ride to other be able to just walk in here and just support us, support the women’s team and support the track team and support every event that happens outdoors on this facility,” said Paredes.

The stadium is scheduled to open in time for the 2024 Fall Semester, as well as both women’s and men’s soccer team’s home openers.
