UW-Superior senior thrower C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) won both the weight throw – in school-record fashion – and the shot put to lead the UW-Superior men’s track and field team in a strong showing at the Lake Superior Challenge at St. Scholastica’s Burns Wellness Commons on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Pillath’s toss of 18.99 meters bettered his own school record set earlier this season by two centimeters. He currently sits third in NCAA Division III in the discipline. Pillath also threw 14.64 meters in the shot put, winning that event over Colton Kostynick of Minnesota Duluth by more than 1.3 meters.

Junior Tyler Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) was victorious in the 800 meters, giving UWS a third event win on the day. Finger ran 2:04.83, out pacing classmate Travis Gee (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union), who ran 2:08.43.

Freshman Steven Pearson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was second in the 200 meters in a season-best 23.59, while sophomore Lennon Shimon (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) was second in the 400 meters in 53.89.

Freshman Bryan Lemmer (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) finished second in the 3,000-meter run in 9:59.99 beating out classmate Kei Okamoto (Nagoya, Japan/Mound-Westonka (Minn.)) who ran the event in 10:39.06.

Meanwhile, in the women’s events, Senior LeAnn Torgerson (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) finished second in the 200-meter dash. Torgerson ran 26.89 in the 200, narrowly getting nipped by Anika Kling of St. Scholastica, who ran 26.46. Torgerson also posted a career-best in the 60-meter dash, placing third at 8.24.

Freshman Kasha Hughlett (Maple, Wis./Northwestern) was seventh in the weight throw with a season-best toss of 12.34 meters, Hughlett was also 10th overall in the shot put with a mark of 8.83 meters.

Following The Showcase at St. Thomas on Friday, Feb. 14,  the Yellowjackets return home to host the the Yellowjacket Open on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
