With the snow beginning to recede from the UW-Superior campus, the college’s brand new Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium is once again finding use for the school’s sports, just not those within the athletic department.
Before Track and Field is able to host a meet this spring, the stadium will house both intramural soccer and flag football, both of which are being offered for the first time at the new complex.

“Once that stadium opened, I knew it needed to be used by us,” said Garrett Kroells, the intramural lead with Campus Recreation and Physical Education Major at the school.
“I realized in late November that I wanted to start a flag football league, so I decided that spring would be more of a test run for fall, and I was talking to people around campus, and they liked the idea, they were open to it.”
The flag football league will house teams playing 7v7 on a shortened field in the stadium, with a running clock for the two 20 minute halves, except for the final two minutes of a half.
On the other hand, intramural soccer will run in a 5v5 format, with a running clock for the entire match. With UWS having already established itself as a regional soccer powerhouse, this intramural league will further grow the school’s already strong community around the sport.
“I think it creates better student involvement” said Marshall Swanson, Kroells’ assistant on the project and a soccer player in high school who believes that the more offerings the campus has, the more students will be encouraged to interact with each other outside of the classroom. “I would love to see it to the point where we have 10 teams in (intramural) sports.”

Intramural sports will be held at SCCU Stadium for the first time in 2025.

For those interested in cheering on their fellow students during the games, flag football will be taking place on Thursday evenings through April until the playoffs on May 6, with soccer taking the field on Monday evenings until the playoffs on May 5.
