Just because classes stopped for the Fall Semester doesn’t mean the action stopped for the UW-Superior athletic teams. Five teams were still in action over break and each had success over the break.
We will start off with the women’s hockey team which competed in the Fondy Pot Invitational which was hosted by Marian University. They started the tournament off hot by taking down the hosts Marian 6-2 behind two goals from Senior Jenna Hoops. In the championship they took down conference foe UW-Stevens Point 5-0 behind a 24 save outing from goalie Anna Maulson. Also over the break they took the season sweep over Concordia College (Minn) 3-2. They then lost a pair of games to the then ranked number two and defending national champions UW-River Falls.
Over to men’s hockey were they made the long bus ride to Boston to compete in the 59th annual Codfish Bowl Tournament. They took their opener in the tournament 2-0 over Fitchburg State. They then went onto face tournament host UMass-Boston in the final which they took 5-2 by scoring all of their goals in the first two periods. The Yellowjackets continued their winning ways as they took games over Concordia (Minn.), Northland College and St. John’s. Over the break the Yellowjackets also broke into the national rankings and are currently ranked in the top 15.

Over to women’s basketball where they opened up the break successfully with a win over Milwaukee School of Engineering 56-49 which snapped a four game losing streak. The Jacket’s then opened up conference play with a win over North Central in a rematch of the semi-finals of the UMAC playoffs from last season. They then took down Bethany Lutheran behind late game heroics from Elise Besonen as she drained a shot with just a few seconds left on the clock to win the game 64-63. They then made quick work of Northland College before dropping a competitive game on the road to Martin Luther 52-60.
On the men’s side their break started with the Radisson Holiday Classic which was hosted by UW-River Falls. They dropped both of the games in the tournament first in a competitive game against UW-Stout and then to host River Falls. Like their women counterparts they opened up conference play in a rematch of the UMAC playoffs against North Central. A late game comeback pushed the Yellowjackets over the Rams which led to another UMAC tournament rematch against Bethany Lutheran. The Yellowjackets needed another comeback to take down the Vikings. Behind a 30 point performance from Reid Johnson the Yellowjackets were able to exact a measure of revenge over Bethany Lutheran. They then took care of both Northland and Martin Luther to start out conference play 4-0.

Over to track and field where both teams competed in the Twin Ports Open hosted in the Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse here at UW-Superior. At that event Earl Foster set the school indoor 200-meter hurdles record with a time 25.39 seconds. On the women’s side Summer Hesseldahl was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles and Bel Dimaze also took home a victory in the high jump. There is still plenty of time to catch the Yellowjackets in the winter semester as every team makes the push towards conference playoffs.
