Attention, attention! Veterans Day just passed around the corner, and the University of Wisconsin-Superior held a special ceremony for these extra special people. The term veteran implies that someone has served in the military, air, or naval service and was honorably released. Many, during their time of service, go above and beyond their duties and receive commendable awards for their actions.
UWS does something similar. The award is called the Henry Blomberg Excellence in Service Award. It is a mix of academics and veteran status. Blomberg graduated from Superior Normal School (now UW Superior) in 1916 and then joined the Wisconsin National Guard. After being wounded in battle in 1918, he was awarded the second-highest military honor: the Distinguished Service Cross.

The award ceremony occurred Monday, Nov. 11, in the UWS Yellowjacket Union Atrium. Five individuals—current students, staff members, or alumni—received this honor this year.
Interim Veteran and Nontraditional Student Programs Coordinator Gabriel Sexton said, “I think it’s awfully great. This year we had quite a bit of people nominated and it’s kind of rewarding knowing that there are so many people to pick from. It’s a really good thing we have going here; it shows that our campus is pretty military friendly.”
The list includes Petty Officer First Class U.S. Navy Mike Erickson, E-4 Specialist U.S. Army Michelle White, E-4 Specialist U.S. Army Scott Vosen, Sergeant U.S. Army Michalle Poppy, and U.S. Air Force Tom Culbert.
Nontraditional student and veteran White said, “I was truly shocked to receive the award since I live over five hours away. It truly is an honor. I am so thankful to my family and friends who have supported not only my military experience, but my education experience as well. I would not be here without them.”
Veterans Day is a powerful reminder of the dedication and selflessness of those who have served in the military. The Henry Blomberg Excellence in Service award is one way UWS recognizes the veterans who are continuing to exemplify the values of service, leadership, and excellence in all they do.
As the day comes upon us, remember to reflect on the sacrifices the veterans have made and express deep gratitude for their service. It’s an honor to share this occasion with those who inspire everyone to live with purpose, commitment and pride.
