The University of Wisconsin-Superior Head Women’s Hockey coach, Dan Laughlin has announced his retirement after 21 seasons.

Laughlin is a UW-Superior graduate and started his coaching career with the Sioux City Musketeers before beginning at UW Superior as an assistant coach in 2002. After the 2002 season, Laughlin was hired as the head women’s hockey coach for the Yellowjackets in 2003, making him the fifth head coach in program history.

In his first season as head coach, the Yellowjackets won 19 games and won the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular season championship. This was only the start for Laughlin as he recorded 300 wins as the head women’s hockey coach during his 21-year career. The 300th win came against Northland College, where the Jackets won 4-0 to wrap up the regular season. During Laughlin’s career, he has coached several All-American players as well as All-WIAC conference players.

Coach Laughlin has impacted several Yellowjacket athletes from his first season on campus to his last. “He has done a lot for the program; he basically built it. I have only been with him for three years, but he is a very memorable guy, very holy and down to earth and humble. I am just very grateful that I was one of his players, that could have been with him for his last years of coaching before retirement,” said Cora Coz a junior defenseman.

UW-Superior athletics is conducting a national search to replace the four-time NCHA coach of the year, as Coach Laughlin enters his retirement.
