The UW-Superior (UWS) men’s soccer team had three goal scorers and goalkeepers Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and Ulrik Lager (Vollen, Norway/Asker VGS) combined to shut out Bethel 3-0 at Ona Orth Complex in Arden Hills, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Yellowjackets looked strong throughout, outshooting the Royals, 13-9 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal.
Senior Danny Kearns (Greenock, Scotland/Clydeview Academy) opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Junior Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) doubled the lead just after halftime. His goal was assisted by Miguel Ocampo (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park). Galen Coy (Amery, Wis./Amery) finished off the Royals in the 89th minute bringing the score to its final tally.
The win moves Superior to 14-3-2 overall as the ‘Jackets get set for the UMAC tournament semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6 against the winner of the match between Martin Luther and Northland. Bethel’s season comes to an end at 6-11-1.
The women’s team did not fare as well, losing in the 97th minute against Martin Luther (MLC). MLC’s Lydia Bitter scored as the Knights nipped the ‘Jackets 1-0 in overtime in the regular-season finale for both teams at Knight Field in New Ulm, Minn.
The win helped the Knights secure the No. 4-seed in the UMAC tournament.
Martin Luther controlled play much of the day, holding a 19-3 advantage in shots, including 11-3 on goal.
UWS, which closes the regular season 7-10-2 overall, will head to Northwestern to take on the second-seeded Eagles Wednesday, Nov. 6 in St. Paul, Minn. The Knights finish at 7-9-1 overall.
