Many educational buildings are located at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and all are equally important. One essential building is the Link Center, where students can access career services, academic service-learning, internships, undergraduate research, voter engagement, strategic partnerships, employer relations, and regional outreach. On Feb. 13 at 6 pm, the Veterans and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) collaborated with the Link Center to present a resume workshop. The event was mainly held over Zoom, but a few VNSC participants showed up in person.
Career Development Manager at the Link Canter, Liza Shelquist, said, “The event is hyper-focused on resume instances that may be geared more toward veterans and nontraditional students. Specifically, going to be reviewing how to translate military jargon into more civilian language to help the recruiters understand what was done during a person’s time in the military. Then going to talk about how could we explain a gap in a resume. And then third, how to best advertise a shift in career paths.”
A few tips from the meeting indicate that college students should assess their resume materials after every semester and tailor their application materials to each different job application. Along with this event resume workshop, the Link Center is a crucial resource to students at any level. Gabriel Sexton, the interim coordinator for the VNSC, described meeting veteran individuals who did not know how to write their experiences on a resume because of the military jargon. “After that, it made me think about how many people do we service that are like that. How do we describe these things in civilian terms? I don’t know, but that’s what we are here for, and I think it’s really important,” said Sexton.
The collaboration between the Veterans and Nontraditional Student Center and the Link Center highlights the importance of providing tailored support to students navigating the transition from military to civilian careers. The resume workshop exemplifies how targeted resources can empower individuals to communicate their unique experiences and skills effectively. The Link Center is located in Swenson Hall 1061, or one can email them at career@uwsuper.edu.
