UWS Men’s and Women’s Soccer Dominates in First Game at SCCU Stadium

UW-Superior’s men’s and women’s soccer teams took the field for the first time at the new Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The first game of the doubleheader was the men’s team taking on Minnesota Morris in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match.

The Yellowjackets started the game hot as Felipe Oliveira scored the first goal early in the first half at the new on-campus stadium. He was assisted by his teammate Freddy Watson. Yellowjackets take a 1-0 lead.

Later in the half, Oliveira returned the favor as he assisted Freddy Watson on the second goal of the game. The Yellowjackets took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half and carried that into the second half where they scored five more goals on the night. Taking down Minnesota Morris 8-1.

Leading the way in scoring for the Yellowjackets was Jake Kidd, who scored two goals on the night.

Despite the first victory on the new turf, the first game at the SCCU Stadium was historic for the UWS soccer programs and the university.

“To be a part of this and be a part of history. Like for us we’ve waited a year maximum for this. But for these guys, for coach, we have been waiting for this for a long time. A lot of people have worked very hard, big smiles, a perfect day. Now we are actually here, and it just feels like so much has been built up to and it couldn’t have gone any better,” said Isaac Becket, a midfielder for the men’s soccer team.

With the opening of the new on-campus stadium, the Yellowjackets now have a new place that they can call their home.

“Just having the whole event on campus, the tailgate before. People only having to walk from the dorms right to here. It feels like a home, it feels like it’s actually our game rather than it being played on someone else’s field. This is where we are meant to be and this is where we are meant to be playing,” said Becket.

For the second game of the soccer doubleheader, the women’s team also played Minnesota Morris for their first game at SCCU stadium.

It did not take long for the Jackets to score as Niya Wilson set up her teammate Kamryn Hill for the first goal of the contest. Yellowjackets up 1-0. Still, in the first half, Niya Wilson is set up by her teammate Erika Schneider for the second goal of the game.
The Yellowjackets will keep up the dominant offense as they get the victory 8-0 over Minnesota Morris.

Wilson led the team in scoring three goals on the day. Earning a hat trick during her first game at SCCU stadium.

The same excitement from the men’s game carried over to the women’s game and players felt the importance of the new on-campus stadium for the team and the campus as a whole.

“I think the new stadium will have a huge impact on our campus. Already in our first game at the stadium, we had quite a few students show up for us. We hope with the stadium now being on campus versus being down the road at the high school, that we will have more of a student section at our games,” said Mya Holmquist, forward for the UWS women’s soccer team.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams will wrap up their regular season on November 2nd against Crown College.
