Men’s tennis sweeps Minnesota Morris; Women lose 6-3

The UW-Superior men’s and women’s tennis teams were in action against Minnesota Morris on Sunday, April 25. The men’s team swept the UMAC foe 9-0, while the women won three out of their nine matches.

Men’s Team

The Yellowjackets blanked the Cougars at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6, to move to 4-1 in the UMAC this season. Gergo Potz Nagy (Bu­dapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Gram­mar School) shut out Tai­yo Larson on one while Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy), Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and Gavin Mangan (Hender­son, Nev./Basic Academy) did the same to Nick Garmen, Paul Decker and Cole Peterson, respec­tively.

With the win, Superior moves to 8-4 while Min­nesota Morris is now 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the UMAC.

Women’s Team

Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) teamed to beat Kiley Rodermel and Kate Obright, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, before Cal­laway dispatched Roder­mel at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Wald earned her program-best 25th career singles win with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Sam Tate at court two.

From there, it was all Cougars as they won the remaining doubles and singles matches. With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to 5-7 and 3-2 in the UMAC. Morris improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Callaway was named UMAC women’s tennis Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday. She finished 3-0 in both doubles and singles matches this week.

The men and women’s teams wrap up their seasons this afternoon as they take on Northwest­ern at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex.
